Finding and Retaining Qualified Employees

By ESX Chairman George De Marco

Running a successful business requires having access to a qualified workforce, especially in the electronic security industry. Finding the right candidates in a low unemployment environment makes it a real challenge, including retaining qualified employees once you find them. And without them, your business can’t grow and prosper. According to many security industry professionals, access to qualified employees is one of the top three challenges they face today.

46% of newly-hired employees will fail within 18 months, while only 19% will achieve unequivocal success

At a recent ESA Leadership Summit, Mark Murphy, author of Hiring for Attitude, spoke on an interesting hiring study: 46% of newly-hired employees will fail within 18 months, while only 19% will achieve unequivocal success. He discovered that people only fail 11% of the time because of technical incompetence, while 89% of the time it was due to a lack of coachability, emotional intelligence, motivation and temperament.

Focusing on candidates’ technical skills without properly assessing their soft skills causes higher employee turnover and leads to lower employee morale, and keeping employees with bad attitudes diminishes your ability to attract and retain the right employees. No one wants to work with an employee who has a bad attitude, and no employee wants to recommend a qualified candidate for employment at a company with low morale. In addition, the customer experience journey suffers greatly when there is high employee turnover and low morale, and increases customer attrition as a result.

Once you hire a qualified candidate, that is when the real work begins. Retaining great people is based on their employee experience journey, such as having a great company culture and purpose, positive onboarding process and training path, solid career advancement, appropriate compensation, meaningful recognition programs, and quality benefits.

Once you hire a qualified candidate, that is when the real work begins.

Today, employers need to redefine their culture, rethink their recruiting strategies, and redesign their brand as they attract the next generation work force. At ESX 2019, we have sessions to help you and your team do all this and more. In addition, you’ll have access to industry professionals that give you their perspectives on how they are finding and retaining employees in this low unemployment environment.
